Historic finish: all four NHRA pro champions win at final event

For the first time in NHRA history, all of the professional event winners were also the world champions at the Finals at Auto Club Raceway.

Tanner Gray clinched the Pro Stock championship on Saturday just by qualifying in the top half of the field. He becomes the youngest professional series champion in NHRA history at 19 years, six months. On Sunday, he went through the field, defeating Drew Skillman in the final round.

Last year Gray was the rookie of the year, this year the Pro Stock champ, and next year he leaves drag racing to go NASCAR truck racing.

J.R. Todd, driver of the DHL Toyota Camry for Kalitta Motorsports, captured his first career Funny Car world championship Sunday afternoon to become the first African-American Funny Car champion in NHRA history. Todd entered the final race of the 2018 NHRA season with a 74-point lead in the standings over the defending world champion, Robert Hight, and officially clinched the championship when Hight was defeated by Bob Tasca in the first round of eliminations in Pomona after smoking the tires.

Matt Smith had to wait until the final round to claim his third championship in Pro Stock Motorcycle. He set a national speed record in the process.

“Man, we went through a lot today,” Smith said. “With the airline breaking in the first round and in the second round the transmission broke on us going through the lights. My guys did their job and we fixed all of the stuff that broke and ended up putting up three 200 mph runs today. We are having the time of our life right now though.”

Steve Torrence took the championship at Las Vegas and then turned his sights on winning all six events of the Countdown. He accomplished his goal by dominating the class and getting a holeshot victory over Tony Schumacher in the final round at Pomona.

NHRA announces 18-event 2019 Pro Stock schedule

The NHRA announced on Saturday, Nov. 10, a new schedule for the Pro Stock class, consisting of 18 events.

“We think the new schedule will increase participation by relieving the economic burden and time commitment that comes with 24 events, which will ignite more intense competition. All of that should make for compelling action and drive fan interest,” said Josh Peterson, NHRA vice president of racing administration.

Pro Stock will compete at these events:

Feb. 7-10 Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals Pomona, Calif.

Feb. 22-24 NHRA Arizona Nationals Phoenix

March 14-17 Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals Gainesville, Fla.

April 5-7 DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals Las Vegas

May 17-19 Virginia NHRA Nationals Richmond, Va.

May 30-June 2 Route 66 NHRA Nationals Chicago

June 20-23 Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals Norwalk, Ohio

July 19-21 Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals Denver

July 26-28 NHRA Sonoma Nationals Sonoma, Calif.

Aug. 2-4 NHRA Northwest Nationals Seattle

Aug. 15-18 Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals Brainerd, Minn.

Aug. 28-Sept. 2 Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals Indianapolis

They also will be competing in all six of the Countdown to the Championship events. The Pro Stocks will not be at: Houston, Charlotte 1, Atlanta, Topeka, Bristol, or Epping.

No official mention yet of the Mountain Motor Pro Stocks that tried out with the NHRA at this year’s U.S. Nationals, although the Agent hears that they are in negotiations about attending events next season.

Hellcat? Hell, yeah!

Why is this man smiling? Although Tommy Johnson Jr. did not win the Funny Car championship, he did get a pretty good prize. The top performing Don Schumacher Racing driver at Pomona gets a Dodge Hellcat to drive for the coming year.

“I thank Dodge and Mopar for putting the Hellcat on the line for the highest finishing driver. That certainly was in the back of our mind and we’ll put it to good use this year.”

Johnson got a semifinal win over fellow Mopar driver Jack Beckman and finished runner-up at Pomona, giving him third place in the final points.

Don’t let a little fire stop you

Mike Salinas had a spectacular fireball in Saturday’s final qualifying session. As he crossed the finish line, his engine let go, but he still moved up to the No. 11 qualifying spot with a 3.762 at 294.50 mph. Strangely, in the next pair, Terry McMillen also had an engine explosion in the lights. Both dragsters were in the right lane. Salinas lost in the first round to Blake Alexander while McMillen bowed out to Clay Millican.

Scott joins Jay Turner Racing for 2019

DRO Motorcycle Editor Tom McCarthy tells us that Mike Scott, a noted Top Fuel Harley pilot, has announced he has signed on with Jay Turner Racing for all ten NHRA Mello Yello events in 2019. Mike is now sponsored by TRIDYNE PROJECTS and is out of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. See the rest of McCarthy’s Motorcycle Memos at here

New ‘QR Code’ system makes quick identifying of competitors possible

McCarthy also gives BIG PROPS to Brian “NHDRO” Welch, the leader of the No Hatin’ Drag Racing Organization, for his courage and innovation by embracing new technology that improves motorcycle drag racing by a bunch. In October of 2018 the NHDRO began using a “QR Code” (www.qrstuff.com/scan) system to ID all the drag bikes and their respective drivers.

Once clear of Tech, the drag bike and the driver information is generated onto a QR coded sticker that looks like an enlarged, pixilated B&W square code. Once this sticker is attached to the machine, an event crew staff member in lower or upper staging can scan the code and the tower instantly receives full information on the driver and the bike, and this information drives the whole system seamlessly, making the entire racing operation run quicker, more efficiently. Over time, this system has the potential to impact all of drag racing.

This sounds like a good candidate for our “New Product of the Day.”
