Brian Lohnes has been named lead announcer beginning next season for all 24 NHRA national events broadcast on FOX and FS1. Lohnes was a contributor over the past three seasons, but now joins the team full-time.
In making the announcement, the NHRA made no mention of Dave Rieff, who became the lead announcer back in 2013 when ESPN2 covered the NHRA series.
In 2019, NHRA will experiment with new show formats including several broadcasts which will exclusively feature the Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle categories. They will also continue to work with FOX Deportes to offer NHRA drag racing in Spanish. [11/19/18]
Our deepest sympathies to family and friends for this tragic loss. [11/19/18]
Behind the scenes at the NHRA Pomona World Finals was a cluster of 2018 Heritage Series Champions awaiting introductions to the crowd. Receiving their official jackets and Wally’s were (L to R) Nitro Funny Car Champion Bobby Cottrell, Top Fuel Champ Mendy Fry, A/Fuel’s Drew Austin, C/Gas winner Chris Rea, B/Gas Champ Kevin Riley and Brad Denny, the Nostalgia Eliminator 2 Champion. Liberal Nationals coalition leader Matthew Guy has promised to build the “Colosseum of Drag Racing” in Melbourne, Australia, if he wins government in this weekend’s Victorian State election (Saturday, Nov. 24).
Guy made the announcement in Melbourne, promising to spend AUD $10m (USD $7m) to find and purchase a suitable site before committing another AUD $30m (USD $21m) for its construction.
Guy’s announcement follows meetings held between the Opposition leader and second-generation drag racing official Lachlan Craven, reigning Pro Bike champion Maurice Allen, and long-time media representative Gerald McDornan, with the trio having presented a proposal for the facility.
Allen said although the announcement hinges on Saturday’s state election, it was still a historic day for the sport with the return of the annual Australian Nationals to Melbourne first on the list of priorities.
“This is a great day for our sport and we’d like to thank Mr. Guy and his team for seeing the benefits of this particular project. Today’s announcement is incredible in what it means for so many passionate competitors, spectators, and enthusiasts,” Allen said. [11/19/18]

A photo was in the ol’ mayo jar on the penthouse porch high atop the second story of the Phlegm Building this morning, along with a note written on a muffaletta wrapper. Famed chassis builder Chuck Haase is seen here getting the nitro motor ready for the 1985 Motorcraft Funny Car to be cackled by Mark Oswald at the South Louisiana Dragway Reunion on Nov. 30-Dec. 1 in Houma, Louisiana.
