The next cold event was not too bad actually,
but it was the last NHRA Museum Cruise put in
association with Cal Rods, and it a huge success.
There wasn't enough room for all the cars that
showed up, they were parked everywhere. The
prize for the 50/50 drawing that they have was
around $1800. Steve Gibbs was on hand and won
a pair of tickets for the Winternationals, and
said, "Put them back in the pot, I'm retired".
I ran into a gentleman by the name of Pat Coyle
from Rancho Cucamonga, CA who has been building
his project called "Blackbird" for quite some
time. The 1961 all steel Thunderbird really
looked interesting to me, so I started talking
with Pat about it. He is a former crew member
for both Rich Guasco "Pure Hell" and Larry Huffs'
Soapy Sales Corvette, so when he told me that
he was going to run this big bad Thunderbird
on nitro, my ears perked up. "Tim I'm going
to run this Bird on about 65% to 85% nitro,
it's got a Rich Guasco-built 392, and I know
its safe." Instantly I handed Pat my card, and
said, "Please let me know when you are going
to run the black beast". So when Pat makes his
debut in the near future, we'll have it first
at www.dragracingonline.com, right here in this
column...or maybe a cover?
Another great new Nostalgia car that will debut
early next year will be the brand new Heystee
and Spar Racing NE1 blown big block roadster.
If the name Spar sounds familiar, it's John
Spar who runs B & M Automotive, promotes races
and writes for a couple of books, too. Ed Heystee
is a long time friend of mine and he started
out in Drag Racing as a pretty damn good photographer,
then got into building some of the most awesome
Harley's you've ever seen (Bad Bikes in Santa
Monica), and got his college degree, became
a VP in banking and then formed CARE (Children's
Advancement for Racing Endeavors). He is also
a certified hypnotherapist. Ed also drove the
old CARE NE2 T roadster and some other assorted
racecars. This car has sponsors like B &M, Meguirs
Wax, GM Performance, etc. Maybe we will do a
feature on this prizewinner at the 2003 SEMA
Show. Gotta' get this one in the mail, but please
let us know if you are building anything Nostalgia.
You can e-mail me at tmarshall29@hotmail.com
or here at marshall@racingnetsource.com
and we'll get you some free ink!
Till next time, stay warm and avoid the flu
if you can...
