BOB'S BIG BOY AS IT WAS,
1949
About 10 years ago, the famous Toluca Lake,
Calif., drive-in restaurant featured in this

remodeling. During its reconstruction, members
of the Los Angeles-based Tabletop Rodders club
approached the contractor and building owner
with a request for the restaurant's original
blueprints, expressing interest it creating
a diorama. To the club's surprise, the building
owner supplied a full set of the late-1940s
plans. The Tabletop Rodders went to work on
this deadly-accurate reproduction of Bob's as
it appeared from 1949 through the 1980s, complete
with period-correct vehicles for the drive-in
stalls and parking lot. Twenty club members
participated, including Chris Murray (pictured)
of Santa Clarita, Calif. Ironically, their favorite
building material turned out to be cardboard
hamburger boxes from Burger King! Dave Wallace
shot this photo in 1999 at the NHRA Museum,
where the scale model was briefly displayed.
