MALLOY SETS ATCO RECORDS

Bob Malloy shattered the Atco (NJ) Dragway track records on his way to the runner-up finish at the initial Screamin' Eagle Drag Series event. Aboard the Harley-Davidson of Seaford Buell, Malloy qualified No. 1 and set the record with a 6.459 at 211.20 mph on his first qualifying pass. In the final round, the main bearing on the crankshaft gave up, spilling oil on the track and handing the event win to Tracy Kile.

"I apologized to Joe Sway for messing up his race track," Malloy said, "but in my heart I knew that we had tried our best and it just wasn't meant to be."

IT SURE BEATS A GOLD WATCH

Mopar celebrated the career of NHRA Pro Stock driver Darrell Alderman July 15 at the Mopar Big Block Party, held in downtown Golden, Colo. The commemoration coincided with the 25th annual Mopar Mile-High Nationals and the announcement that Alderman will sit out the rest of the season due to nagging back problems.

"The time has come for me to get [my back problems] corrected and take off the rest of the year," the three-time NHRA Pro Stock champion said emotionally. "Really the future is in doubt ... but I can't say enough about Mopar and these great fans who've stuck with me through thick and thin."

Mopar's Christine Cortez, Senior Vice President - Global Service and Parts, then gave Alderman a 340-horsepower gift.

"We won't worry about next year. We want to give our tribute to you now! And that is our tribute," Cortez said, gesturing to a brand new Inferno Red Hemi-powered Dodge Magnum R/T and handing him the keys. (Darr Hawthorne photo) [7-16-2004]
