KJ TO DRIVE CHEVY CAVALIER IN 2001
DETROIT
-- Chevrolet Cavalier brand manager Steve Wagg has announced that the
Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 will compete in the 23-event 2001 Pro Stock category
of the NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series. One of the first teams to campaign
the Cavalier Z24 in 2001 is the ACDelco-sponsored team of Kurt Johnson.
Kurt is currently second in 2000 NHRA Winston Championship points in
the Pro Stock class in a Chevrolet Camaro Z28. Other Cavalier teams
will be announced in the near future.
"NHRA drag racing has demonstrated a strong growth in recent years
and is a popular form of entertainment among young car buyers," said
Wagg. "Therefore, we can't think of a better arena to promote the Cavalier
brand than NHRA drag racing, where the fans are serious about their
cars and are knowledgeable consumers. We're confident that the Z24 and
the teams that will campaign it will translate the brand's success in
the marketplace to high achievement on the race track. "
The Pro Stock Cavalier Z24 will produce approximately 1300 horsepower
with its 500 cu. in. Chevrolet V8 racing engine and is expected to cover
the quarter-mile in under seven seconds at over 200 mph. The current
Pro Stock elapsed time national record is 6.809 seconds; and the top
speed record is 202.36 mph.
"Cavalier has been very successful in attracting young buyers to Chevrolet,
due to its standard equipment that even includes four-wheel antilock
brakes," added Wagg. "It also remains one of the top new-car choices
for first-time buyers. With many standard features, it offers value
to the small-car buyer. It's the kind of car for young-minded people
with purchasing savvy who want a more attractive, quality small vehicle
reflecting their sensibility. NHRA fans clearly fall into this category."
