SOUTHEAST TRACKS SWITCH SANCTIONING BODIES
Agent 1320 hears that the former IHRA National Event track at Darlington
will go over to NHRA and get a points meet to offset Virginia Motorsports
Park's move over to IHRA for the 2001 season.
NHRA TO NAME NEW PRODUCTION COMPANY
NHRA says that within a week it will announce a new production company
that will be responsible for the NHRA's TV packages, including the NHRA
Heat show and the race programs. Agent 1320 hears that the list is down
to two groups but long time Diamond P producer John Mullen and his group
has the inside track.
BIG MONEY BRACKET RACES FOR NHRA?
Agent 1320 heard a rumor that NHRA is looking at helping some of their
member tracks promote big-buck bracket races like the B&M series or
the Ten-'Tuck. The reason being that NHRA tracks that host Federal Mogul
points meets need another event that will put 400-600 cars through the
back gate. Tracks that can't host a National Event or a Super Chevy
race need these kinds of events to make them really profitable. Remember
we said rumor!
NHRA PRO MOD SAGA CONTINUES
NHRA has apparently come to the realization that the stars of Pro Modified
such as the Stott brothers, Jim Oddy and Fred Hahn, Tommy Mauney and other
IHRA regulars aren't going to take a step down and return to the sportsman
ranks even to run NHRA. The Agent hears that there are still people working
inside NHRA to find a way to bring Pro Mod to NHRA events as a professional
class.
MORE BAD NEWS FOR NHRA ALKY RACERS
As if the rumor that NHRA would drop the Federal Mogul Funny Cars and
dragsters at some National events due to lack of entries wasn't bad
enough the Agent hears the track owners that have points meets with
alky cars are complaining to NHRA because they have to put up the purse
for those cars at the points meets and aren't getting enough entries
for full fields in many cases. Can you say Pro Mods instead?
FUEL CHECK? WE DON'T NEED NO STINKIN' FUEL CHECK
Ray Alley told the Agent that since Bill Miller's Top Fuel car flunked
the 90% nitro rule earlier this year at Phoenix only one fuel car has
failed and that didn't occur in eliminations.
IHRA MAY ELIMINATE MORE PRO CLASSES
Agent 1320 was told by a source close to IHRA that they know that the
Top Fuel, Pro Stock, Pro Mod, and Fuel Harley classes all need more
purse money and one way that is being looked at is to eliminate some
classes and free up some purse money. Perhaps this is the real reason
for the demise of the Pro Outlaw and the continued rumors that Pro Funny
may be the next to go. Just a rumor the Agent heard.
PRO FUNNY RACERS MOVING TO PRO MOD
The Agent hears that some of IHRA's Alky Funny Car racers (aka Pro Funny)
are considering making the move to Pro Mod since the current IHRA rules
allow hemi engines with billet heads. Basically, all those racers would
have to do is get a Pro Mod roller and bolt their existing engine and
drive train into it.
Most engine builders the Agent has talked to say that the billet hemi
heads will flow at least 10-percent more than the best wedge head. More
flow means more power. If IHRA doesn't factor the hemi-headed cars,
look for a big crossover to the hemi in Pro Mod and a serious run at
the five-second doorslammer lap.
PREDICTION: KUHLMANN WILL BREAK FIVE-SECOND
BARRIER IN VIRGINIA!
The Super Chevy races are being held at Virginia Motorsports Park this
weekend (Oct 7-8) This track is notorious for yielding quick doorslammer
times. The weather calls for temps in the high 50's for the weekend
with a big high-pressure system over the area. Kuhlmann could easily
run a five-second pass at over 250! Remember where you read it.
