BURK, MARTIN WIN AWARDS
If you liked the photo above, you weren't alone. The picture of Doug
Herbert's explosion at the 1999 World Finals appeared in the Nov. 29,
1999 issue of Sports Illustrated. Photographer Jeff Burk
has just received a Merit Award in the category Photography: Reportage
Spread or Single Page, judged by the Society of Publication Designers.
Proving that his talents extend to more than drag racing history and
beer quaffing, Editor at Large Chris Martin took third place in a poetry
contest sponsored by the International Library of Poetry.
The Agent is so proud.
THE CHOSEN ONES
 The
following list was given to DRO by Graham Light, NHRA VP of Competition
on Saturday, February 3. We have put the names in alphabetical order
and corrected spellings.
"Pro Mod invitees for Gainesville: Al Billes, Dale Brinsfield, Mike
Castellana, Troy Critchley, Fred Hahn, Billy Harper, Ronnie Hood, Ed
Hoover, Shannon Jenkins, Chip King, Kirk Kuhns, Alan Pittman, Johnny
Rocca, Rickie Smith, Mitch Stott, Quain Stott, Wayne Torkelson, Todd
Tutterow, Steve Vick
"This list was determined by a variety of factors including past demonstrated
performance, uniqueness of vehicle, and previous NHRA support/participation.
"The eight qualifiers at Gainesville, plus another eight using the
above criteria, will be invited to participate at Bristol (Atlanta will
be the eight qualifiers from Bristol, and so on). Indy's list will comprise
of the qualifiers from all the previous events (Gainesville, Bristol,
Atlanta, and St. Louis)."
