'TYRANT' HEADS NORTH

Canadian Frank Jonkman made a side trip to the Classic Thunder event at Darlington International Dragway on his way to fellow nostalgia Funny Car driver Donnie Reed's shop north of Atlanta to pick up an extra body for his "Nitromare" 1971 Mustang Funny Car. The spare body is from the original "Tyrant" Funny Car campaigned by Dale Creasy Sr. in the early '70s with "Animal Al" Marshall at the wheel.

Jonkman damaged his primary "Nitromare" body when he crashed into the sandtrap earlier this year during the Inaugural Funny Car Reunion at Englishtown, NJ. The car is fully repaired, he said, but still needs paint to be ready for a full schedule of match racing in 2003.

Jonkman purchased the "Tyrant" body from Bob Gibson and also planned to pick up a "Screaming Eagle" Vega chassis from Reed for delivery to Detroit. [12-5-2002]
