MAYBE IF IT HAD BEEN SIGNED BY THE 2001 YANKEES

The Agent was perusing through one of his favorite magazines--AutoWeek--when he came across an ad for a Barrett-Jackson auto auction to be held early this year in Phoenix. It listed a lot of neat old cars, but the one that got the Agent's attention was the New York Yankees/Gwynn family Top Fuel show car that was going on the auction block with no reserve. The big selling point was that the car was signed by the 2002 New York Yankees. Wasn't that the same Yankee team that tanked in the first round of the American League play-offs? Now maybe if it was autographed by the World Series-winning 2001 team the Agent (who is a massive Yankee fan) might be interested. (Jeff Burk photo) [1-3-2003]

DARLINGTON'S "RACE TO THE FIVE" TO BE TELEVISED ON "THE DUECE"

Nowling Motorsports Management announced today that they had secured a television package for the Pro Modified racers at the Darlington WinterNationals to be held Feb. 13-16. Ted Jones' Masters Entertainment Group will devote an entire edition of their "Inside Drag Racing" television program to covering the "Race to the Five" Pro Mod portion of Darlington Dragway's 30th annual WinterNationals! The NHRA-sanctioned National Open will feature supercharged and nitrous oxide-injected Pro Mods and Mountain Motored Pro Stocks in eight-car qualified fields.

"I think there's a real possibility that we could see the five-second barrier for doorslammers broken at this event," said Kenny Nowling. "With that in mind I went to Ted Jones of Masters Entertainment and asked if his company was interested in televising the show."

"I was at Darlington when (Bill) Kuhlmann broke the 200-mph barrier for door cars," Jones replied. "I want to be there for the five-second doorslammer pass. Its history and we want to record it."

"Inside Drag Racing" airs weekly on ESPN2. Check Agent 1320 for times and dates of this broadcast as soon as the schedule is finalized. [1-3-2003]

TEXAS PRO STOCKERS SET '03 RULES

The all new Texas Pro Stock Association is up and running with a full season set for 2003. The basic concept is tube chassis doorslammers with normally aspirated engines and weight breaks based on your combination. The group believes that racers want a pro tree heads-up venue and a large majority of Super Gas/Comp/Bracket cars will fit this program with little modification. Heads-up shows in Texas like Pro Modified, King of the Hill, and Outlaw 10.5 are growing rapidly in popularity and fan support, but are cost prohibitive for most.

Says the press release from the association: "We offer an alternative that is fair, competitive and most of all, within the budget of the average racer. Now we can race like drag racing was meant to be. No throttle stops or lifting at the finish line. That's just WRONG! Bracket racing was forced on us by the governing bodies because it's easier to monitor and more cars can run. Put your dial on the car and off you go. More money for them and less work. But the stands are empty. Fans don't understand bracket or class racing and don't want to learn. If the governing bodies want more growth in our sport, then heads up is it. So if you want to race a clock, then we're not for you. If you want to race the guy in the other lane, then BRING IT!"
