CHRYSLER CLASSIC INVADES COLUMBUS
More than 23,000 Mopar maniacs are expected this coming weekend,
May 16-18, for the 11th Annual Chrysler Classic at National Trail
Raceway, just outside Columbus, Ohio. Up to 500 racecars and 800
show cars, as well as a sizable swap meet and cars-for-sale corral, are
expected to fill the grounds. Festivities are scheduled to go rain or
shine.
Spectator admission is $15 per day, or $25
for the weekend. Racer and show participant
rates, as well as directions, event rules and
hotel information are available online here.
Following the Columbus event, Chrysler Classic
will visit Tri-State Dragway at Hamilton, Ohio,
June 21-23, then Kansas City Int'l Raceway a
week later. (Photo courtesy

TRYING TO SAVE A TRACK
DRO received this letter: "My name is Tony
D. I'm the general manager of Island Dragway,
Great Meadows, NJ. Our local zoning officer,
combined with two local residents and an attorney,
are trying to close us down. Their latest attempt
is a summons claiming an 'expansion of a non-conforming
use.' Basically, in 1960, Island opened on a
set piece of property. Shortly after, it was
found additional pit space was needed. To make

short,
we need proof that prior to April of 1965 Island
was already using the property on the other
side of the 'canal.' I am also trying to contact
Brian Beattie, the original track photographer
for E-town back in the 1960s and '70s. Time
is critical. Any help would be most appreciated."
If you have any old photos of the track or
know how to reach Brian Beattie, send an e-mail
to id1320@nac.net.
