Wondering about the new season
2/8/05
Just
wondering . . . Did you know that there isn't a ticket price
discount for active duty servicemen at NHRA national events, or
at least that is what we were told when we called the NHRA ticket
office to inquire about the matter. This is a disgrace. Many tracks,
including those at Seattle and Las Vegas, offer discounts to their
Lucas Oil events and regular weekend events and they should be commended.
I think discounts should be available at the National events.
Just wondering . . . Considering
the amount of our tax money that the Army is putting into both Don
Schumacher's and NHRA's pockets shouldn't a designated number of
FREE tickets for enlisted vets (staff officers and recruiting people
not included) of the Iraq war be part of the program? If that program
already exists, good! If not, why not?
Just wondering . . . What about
all of those new classes of pro cars NHRA has recently added? No
new classes, you say? Well, I'd like to know what you would call
the AMS/TLR Pro Mods which race at 12 NHRA national events, the
pro import cars that will be at six NHRA national events, and the
Top Fuel Harleys that run at a couple of national events. Qualified
fields, eliminations and one winner. As the old saying goes if it
walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it's a duck.
Just wondering . . . How will
the fact that NHRA drag racing television coverage is moving to
ESPN2 affect sponsorship for both the racers and the sanctioning
body in the future? Over the years NHRA has gone from ABC to ESPN
to ESPN2 with fewer potential viewers able to see the races with
each move. That can't be good news for the sport's corporate sponsors.
Just wondering . . . Do the kind
of fines and penalties handed down to Whit Bazemore for reckless
driving in the pits apply if a driver does something similar during
a test session at a national event track?
Just wondering . . . What's the
big deal about Roy Hill's '66 Mustang and why is he being singled
out for criticism? Do any current Pro Mod bodies actually resemble
factory versions? Have you looked at a photo of the Stones, Woods,
and Cook car and compared it to a current Pro Mod '41 Willys body?
Is there any danger of anyone mistaking a Pro Mod '53 'Vette, '63
'Vette, '67-69 Camaro or any other Pro Mod car with a stock version
of the same car? Free Roy Hill!
Just wondering . . . Will the
suits at NHRA finally realize what a great addition to the U.S.
Nationals the SS/AA shootout is and that it is one of the few things
that actually makes that race different from all the others on the
tour? Why not allow anyone who has one of those cars to enter and
compete in that race?
Just wondering . . . (thanks to
a reader) When will NHRA wake up to the fact that for the first
time in about 35 years all of the major auto manufacturers are engaged
in a "Horsepower War" and that NHRA needs a new heads-up
class for some of the real factory hot rods that are coming out
of Detroit, Tokyo, and Germany these days? It's time to re-invent
Pro Stock!
Just wondering . . . How long
it will take for one of those promoters of the "Million Dollar"
races for bracket cars to apply the same formula to an Outlaw heads-up
doorslammer race? I'd buy a ticket to watch a heads-up 'slammer
race that paid the winner $500,000 and I'll bet there are more than
a few racers who would pay an entry fee to race for that kind of
money.
Just wondering . . . Will we ever
see another NHRA professional class World Champion with a single-car
team after this year? I think not.
Just wondering . . . After NHRA
makes the MSD rev-limiter mandatory will we be seeing 4.46 ET's
in Top Fuel and 330 mph Fuel Coupe speeds?
Just wondering . . . While traveling
around the country the last three weeks, why I couldn't find one
major paper or even the Speed Channel's weekly news show that mentioned
or covered drag racing's test sessions at Las Vegas, Phoenix and
Houston?
Just wondering . . . Does the
NHRA guarantee a car count for TV like NASCAR does? Do they have
to pay a fine if the pro field is short a car or two?
Just wondering . . . Wouldn't
it make a lot more sense for NHRA Pro Stock to switch over to fuel-injected,
small block engines for power instead of the current big blocks
that almost no casual fan nor the factories have an interest in?
My bet is that the cars would run almost as quick and fast as the
current cars in a short period of time by using NASCAR-developed
engine technology. Since the difference between the number one qualifier
and the 16th car is almost always less than a tenth of second, what
is the point of the big block anyway?
