A few New Year’s resolutions from the Burkster

As I sit here trying to come up with a column where I don’t rage against the machine or -- as some of you have accused me of doing recently -- engaging in a rant, I’ve decided that instead of my usual screed what I need to do is make a few New Year’s resolutions, some serious and some with literary tongue firmly planted in my cheek. So here goes.

1. I swear to continue to keep any racer, crew member, or sanctioning body official’s private lives out of 1320 notes unless a felony or farm animals are involved.

2.I pledge not to do any more editorials about blown versus nitrous oxide-injected Pro Modifieds. That ship has sailed.

3.I’m going to try and be more understanding of the decisions that the NHRA and IHRA management teams make.

4. I will make a serious effort to understand that the NHRA and the IHRA management is really trying to promote the sport of drag racing and not just dedicated to squeezing every last nickel they can out of it.

5. I will try my best to understand why the NHRA, a not for profit organization, can only return about 20% of the 107+ million dollars in gross revenues they took in to the racers in the form of prize money.

6. I’ll try to figure out why the racers have to pay for their own insurance with an insurance surcharge added to each entry fee.

7. I’ll try to use the magazine’s readership and reach to help promote struggling racers, racetracks and organizations succeed.

8. I’m going to keep finding and attending and enjoying more drag racing events away from the mainstream NHRA and IHRA national events such as mud drags, sand drags, monster trucks, drag boats, brackets or whatever. If it’s a drag race I’m going!

9. I’m going to attend a least a couple of NHRA or IHRA divisional races next year and give sportsman races and racers more coverage in DRO.

10. I’m going at attend at least one of the Texas Outlaw Fuel Altered Association race.

11. I’m going drag racing as a competitor more this year.

12. I’m going fishing with my pals Paul Romine and Dale Funk.

13. I’m going to get off the tire about Cacklefest cars. If the guys that have them are having fun and aren’t hurting anyone why should I care?

4.I’m going to have more fun and less stress -- and that’s a resolution I intend to keep. Happy New Year!
