More things to
wonder about

8/23/06

Just Wondering...Does it really make a difference to the general TV audience who’s in the booth for the NHRA broadcast? I’ve seen the rating numbers and the difference in numbers of viewers and households watching  the broadcast at races where Marty Reid is the anchor compared to those that Paul Page works and the difference is negligible. Don’t like Mr. Page’s mispronouncings, miscues or mistakes? Then don’t watch, because really big declines in ratings are the ONLY thing that will bring a change in the announce booth.

Just Wondering...Speaking of the NHRA announce team, am I the only one that is over the suit and tie act that Mike Dunn and whoever works with him are forced to do? Drag racing is a blue collar, working man’s sport and in my opinion making those guys work in suits and ties is ludicrous and pretentious.

Just Wondering...Who is Erica Ender’s dad going to threaten to sue over her poor performance so far at her new team?

Just Wondering...Why would any professional racer leave the starting line with his or her vehicle within a couple of pounds of the minimum weight knowing they could be weighed after the pass and wouldn’t be allowed to refuel or replace any fluids?

Just Wondering…How come they don’t make more race T-shirts with front pockets?

Just Wondering...Why do fans and some of my peers lambaste racers like Whit Bazemore, Angelle Sampay, and others when they show real and true emotion in their interviews?  Personally, I like honest emotion in a top end interview better than a driver droning on about his or her sponsors and crew. Who says real drivers don’t cry? Gimme a break!

Just Wondering...How can the NHRA run ads with Force saying, “Every ticket is a pit pass,” when tracks like Billy Meyer’s Motorplex sells a $30 dollar GA ticket for the Friday qualifying show and then tack on a $14 surcharge per ticket if you want pit access too. $44.00 to see a Friday night qualifying show! Are they serious?

Just Wondering...Will Evan Knoll decrease his commitment to the NHRA and NHRA-only teams if the NHRA schedules races on top of IHRA races in 2007?

Just Wondering...Isn’t it time for drag racing to bring back an All-Star team and banquet? Surely the NHRA, IHRA and manufacturers could find room in the budget to support a program and gala  honoring the best and brightest in the sport with no political agenda  involved. Hold the party during the off-season in Vegas or Orlando. DRO will write the first check if someone comes up with a plan.

Just Wondering...Now that Miller Brewing is out of the picture, how long will Anheuser-Busch maintain the presence it has? I’m told that NHRA is already shopping the Top Fuel Shootout around for 2008.

Just Wondering...Who needs electronics when drivers can have a perfect .000 light in one lane and a .002 in the other? Those bike riders are unreal on the lights. On the other hand they do seem to red-light a lot.

Just Wondering... When are we going to get a sub-six-second Pro Mod pass at a sanctioned national event?   Bill Kuhlman, Jay Payne and other racers have recorded six-ohs at national events, but five years after the first six-oh passes there’s still been no “legal” five-second pass.  Pro Mod racing desperately needs something like a five to generate fan and sponsor interest.

Just Wondering...Why are some people so hung up on quarter-mile racing and act as if racing any other distance is bogus? Throughout the history of the sport track distances has varied from 330 ft to a half-mile.

Just Wondering...Aren’t the nitro class beginning to resemble an exhibition class?  I mean just like jet cars if they exceed a de facto speed limit the teams and class gets penalized for doing it.

Just Wondering…For the truly hard core fan, including yours truly, aren’t IHRA, NHRA or ADRL Pro Stockers or Pro Mods more interesting to watch than nitro classes? As a confirmed nitro-junkie I can’t believe I’m saying this, but at least in Pro Stock and Pro Mod you know there is a chance to see record times and speeds show up when those cars race.

Just Wondering…Will the mega-teams that race with the NHRA realize that they really have the power to make the NHRA do what ever they want them to do? Unlike NASCAR where the teams don’t have another series drag racers do. If there is one truth in the sport it is that the fans, sponsors, and TV will follow the name racers where ever they go.

Just Wondering...What marketing genius decided that: 1) after 40 years of referring to Indianapolis Raceway Park racers, fans, and all media would suddenly start referring to the track the O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis and 2) Why after more than 30 years of branding the IHRA name somebody decided that eMax was better?

2 Steps Forward and a Step Back

Just Wondering...How many of NHRA’s professional teams have the resources and funding to add significantly more events should NHRA add multiple dates to the schedule?

Just Wondering…Sometime in the future will the NHRA tour come to resemble some oval track where a core group of racers make all of the events and local racers at each stop ensure full fields?
