Tow Vehicle, Trailer and Tools:
  1. Time to change all the fluids in the tow vehicle. This includes antifreeze and brake fluid, too. Never underestimate the brake system on your tow truck or motor home. Motor homes sit for months at a time outside or in a cold building and this is the ideal place for moisture to get into the brake system. A weekly checklist is something that you have written down to make sure you don't forget something. It also can be used to schedule maintenance.
  2. The trailer is often overlooked until problems arise. Now is the time to pull the wheels off and repack the wheel bearings, replace the seals and look the brake system over. Be especially particular in looking for cracked spindles or missing or broken bolts and studs. The cargo you haul is valuable and how many of you have your racecar insured….not many I bet.
  3. I always ask myself "what did I forget" when the first race weekend comes along. My checklist includes stuff I used during the winter and may not have put back into the toolbox I use in the trailer. Digital volt meter, test light, sockets for lug nuts, jack stands, fitting wrenches, special wrenches you need for the car, trailer or tow vehicle, floor jack and how about this year bringing a roll up mat to lie on when you have to work under the race car, trailer or tow vehicle.

Weekly Checklist:

I have printed out some lists this winter that I will use as checklists this season. Give it some thought, I have not done a good job of this before but with the cost of tow vehicles, trailers and racecars I felt I better stay on top of maintenance better than ever before. The list can be as simple or as complicated as you like. It just has to fit your own personal program. I have mine taped on the racecar Monday night for stuff I have to do to the car. The trailer has a small chalkboard on the door and during the race weekend I write down stuff I want to check or get for the next weekend.

Well, it is about time for me to go pickup my new Dragstar Chassis 4-Link rear engine dragster. I can hardly wait. The engine is done at Indy Cylinder Head and that means a quick road trip over to Indianapolis. There is a lot of work to be done before it hits the track, but I am SO ready to get going. I hope you will click on my other column here on Drag Racing Online, "Project 4-Link" and stay abreast of how it is coming together. Thanks to a lot of great marketing partners, "Project 4-Link" should be my best race car ever.

Stay safe this season and "RACE-ON!"

Good Luck in 2001
and BE SAFE!!!!!
