The easiest way to install traction control
in your race vehicle is the MSD 7531 Digital 7 Ignition
box. MSD has done nothing wrong here -- their box is designed
for Outlaw races, 10.5” tire heads up classes, and
unlimited rules racing. They also make a Programmable Launch
Controller that plugs into their MSD 6 and 7 series ignitions
that are designed for the same type of racing. These units
let you program the time and speed of your launch. If you
begin to spin and you reach an RPM too early in the programmed
time, the unit will slow down the engine via the rev-limiter.
Launch after launch just got a LOT more consistent. Actually,
I would LOVE to have one of these in both of my cars. $600-800
bucks and I would have done one of the best things to make
my car more consistent.

The only problem is: these units are ILLEGAL
for IHRA and NHRA bracket racing. MSD has done their homework
and made it very easy to check for these models of ignition
box. Simply plug a MSD Programmer into the 9-pin connector
and it will show you the model in use. I can only hope local
tracks will check this. I do know that I have a Programmer
for my MSD Digital 7 and welcome showing tech what I have
and will also make the Programmer available to the track
tech crew to check all the MSD Digital ignitions and any
other box with a 9-pin connector. Food for thought, huh?
Keep an eye on the competition, as it is in your best interest.
MSD has always been a huge supporter of our
Project Cars and I have used MSD ignitions for over 25
years exclusively. This traction control product is innovative,
effective and affordable… just remember it is illegal
in bracket racing. As a matter of fact, the MSD unit
with traction control detection is “required” in
NHRA Pro Stock just so nobody can cheat!
We will be doing an article on the latest
MSD Digital ignitions and what they offer for bracket racing
in next month’s magazine in the “Back-2-Basics”
tech column.
Since I mentioned the Project Cars I want
to thank the many fine manufacturers who not only for this
upcoming season but over the past several years have helped
us introduce new products, show installation tips and much
more. My day job has taken so many hours from my month that
I will not have new articles up for “Project 4-Link”
and “Back-2-Basics” until the middle of the
month. I hope you will check back then to see what we do
when we prepare our bracket racers for the weekend battles.
Thanks for reading Dead-On and I hope you
will continue to flip through the pages of this month’s
magazine and enjoy the great articles and feature stories
some of the best writers in the business have put together.
Until next month…Have fun getting ready
for Bracket Racing 2005!!!!!!
