1. One track manager said he had called MSD and asked how to check for the RPM ramping (traction control) devices. They said it is simple, buy the hand-held programmer and just plug it in, turn on the ignition and the model will come up on the screen. If it is a #7531…it is not legal in bracket racing. If there is a Programmable Launch Controller plugged into a MSD box, it is illegal for bracket racing.

2. Three track managers called and said they had gone to “two-hands on the wheel” in their No Box bracket. Simply put, no buttons, no two-steps.

3. Another track owner called and asked for some ideas to put in place in No Box. It is my opinion that the easiest way is to have a “spotter person” on the start line to watch the No Box drivers. Another option is to make sure the wire from the trans-brake button to the trans-brake solenoid is out in the open and a continuous wire (one splice for two-step could be allowed).

4. Around this area one track has banned adjustable buttons and air controlled trans-brake solenoids and throttle controllers. Probably a good move as racers will become “very creative” if it gives them an advantage.

5. Don’t confuse “being smart” with cheating as it is not. Smart racers have won for a long time and that is how it should be. I just feel since the most popular trend is to have a “box” class and a “no-box” class they should be just that.

Some people, most of whom never have or never will actually race, just say “ban everything but the gas pedal, brake pedal and the clutch pedal. Well guess what? “That’s old news, won’t happen, shouldn’t happen and doesn’t need to happen.” We have it pretty good right now; just some cleaning up on the enforcement of rules will make things better for the old racer (like me) and the guys who are just getting their first experiences in Box or No Box.

I can’t close this April column without mentioning Summit Racing and their support of bracket racing across the country. Their IHRA / Bracket Racing World Championship format is the coolest thing I have ever seen for local racers. We all have a chance to be a true World Champ. THANKS TO SUMMIT RACING for making someone’s dream come true and for offering the opportunity to all the bracket racers across the country.

One more thing………….HOW ABOUT THOSE HARLEYS!!!!!! First into the sixes, SWEEEEET! Mopar has already won in Pro Stock-- a racer I knew when he was running at Cedar Falls Raceway with a Stock eliminator Buick, by the name of Jason Line, opened a can of “whoop-ass” on ‘em at Gainesville in Pro Stock. So far it looks like the starts are lined up right…….

The racing begins in a couple weeks for us and I hope for you as well. Good luck to you all and always think SAFETY FIRST.
