Who Will Go the Distance in 2002?

The Eagles wanted to know the answer to this question in "The Long Run" and I am sure all of us drag racing fans are wondering what driver will come out #1 this year.  So, just like mutual fund companies do, we will look at past performance to try and predict this year's winners.  Of course, make sure you cover your bets with the same statement that mutual funds do: "Past performance isn't always an indicator of current and future performance."

I took the top drivers who have qualified at the first two events.  The stats listed are from 1990 and are comparable from year to year. (Elapsed times and MPH would not be comparable from year to year.)  (For PSB, since there have been no events yet, I just put together the most common qualifiers in the table.  PSB stats are from 1999.)  Here is the key to the headings:

Rds=Average Rounds Advanced per Event L=Total Losses R/U=Total Number of Event Runner Ups

Yr=Unique Number of Years Driver Qualified for at Least One Event
# 1's=Total Number 1 Qualifying Positions,

Good=% of Wins Driver Won Because They Outran Opponent but neither aborted

Stat Trivia:

Have you been paying attention to the Pro Stock stats?  WOW!!  Out of the first 60 elimination runs, all but W.J.'s aborted run in the final at Phoenix.  Also the first non 6 second run as well.  Out of those 60 runs, 42 have been in the 6.8's.  Pro Stock is shaping up to be a very competitive and huge statistical increase.  

Here's your trivia question...George Marnell came from the 16th position to win Pomona.  How many times in each Pro class has a driver qualified 16th and won the event?

Once in Top Fuel - Mike Dunn 1993 Fall Dallas Event.

3 times in Funny Car - K.C. Spurlock 1990 Winternationals, Tom Hoover 1997 Columbus, and Bob Gilbertson 2000 Spring Houston event .

3 times in Pro Stock - Mike Edwards 1999 Fall Topeka, Jeg 2000 Indy, and Marnell 2002 Winternationals.

Since 1999 no one PSB has done this.
