DRAW volunteers try to do the right thing

By Tracy Winters

was reading a quote the other day from Theodore Roosevelt. "In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing. The worst thing you can do is nothing."

I suppose that would sum up my involvement with D.R.A.W. For me being involved with D.R.A.W. is very rewarding, not to mention the quality of men and women who are involved in the intricate aspects of a successful charity such as D.R.A.W. The worst thing would be to know about or witness a drag racing accident and do nothing. Being involved with D.R.A.W. is the right thing for me.

Since its inception, D.R.A.W. has provided more than $2.5 million in financial assistance to qualified racers involved in drag racing incidents at a track. During the NHRA CARQUEST Nationals held in Joliet, IL, earlier this month D.R.A.W. raised almost $60,000. As a matter of fact I flew into the Windy City to help with the auction.  It was certainly a lot of fun and very rewarding.  During the live auction Alan Reinhart and Bob Frey interacted well

together.  Obviously, they interacted well with the audience to the tune of $49,889 raised from the live auction.

At the silent auction I bid on a few items to give to my father. In particular, one item was a collector’s professional racer card featuring the late John Myers. John left this world way too soon. My father followed his career closely.  Those of us who knew John can remember that great smile he always flashed and how personable he was no matter how his day was going. The other item I bid on was a spark plug from Don Garlits' Top Fuel car. Who isn’t a fan of Don Garlits?  My small contribution to D.R.A.W. added to the $7,446 raised from the silent auction.

Unfortunately, I did not have an opportunity to purchase a 50/50 raffle ticket. However, John and Diane Cole sold quite a few tickets, raising $1779 for D.R.A.W.

Last, but not least, without Rosalee and Terry Noble, (DRAW’s Fundraising Chair and Ladder Sheet Coordinator, respectively), the auction would not have taken place. Under their direction a dedicated group of volunteers made the annual auction a great success. Rosalee and Terry are constant figures and clearly dedicated to drag racing and D.R.A.W.

So, the next time you are at an NHRA national event stop by the D.R.A.W. booth and see Rosalee and Terry and the dedicated volunteers of D.R.A.W.
