THE SPIRIT OF THANKS!

By Tracy Winters

t is rather interesting how in different phases of our lives the things that we are “thankful” for changes as our life changes. I know the things that I am “thankful” for today are so different in comparison to what I would have been “thankful” for ten years ago.  Today, I am “thankful” for every day that I can spend with my daughter and my Parents. Every day that my parents and my daughter are healthy and safe is another day that my prayers are answered. I feel very fortunate to have both my parents alive and a large part of my life.

That is the amazing thing about the racers we help on a daily, monthly and annual basis. These racers are pretty much happy to be alive and  “thankful” for the support of their family and naturally D.R.A.W. A year before their accident I am certain their list of “thankful” gestures was much different. We receive so many letters and cards from racers and their families whom D.R.A.W. has assisted. When you read the letters and see what they are going through and how “thankful” they are for our support and the fact that they are alive is really very humbling.

We all have experiences in life that are very humbling and truly change our outlook on life. Seven years ago I made a trip to Russia to pick up my adopted daughter, Alexandra. On a train ride from Moscow to Kazan, the train stopped and, I can still remember those people who were selling lighted fixtures from their homes to feed their families. It made me realize how fortunate and blessed I have been during my lifetime. It also something that I will never forget!

Wherever, you are this “Thanksgiving” be “thankful” and share the time with your family and loved ones. Remember to think of our injured racers who are recovering this year. Keep them in your prayers and in your heart!
