St. Valentine and D.R.A.W.!

very February across the country, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. The month of February is long known as the month of romance.
There are many varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine’s Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 AD, the same day that had been devoted to the love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer’s daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it “From your Valentine.” Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius is said to have had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honor St. Valentine. Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers.

Through my work with D.R.A.W., I have learned the impact that one human being has on another. When we leave this world we are remembered by our accomplishments, how we affected the lives of others, and what contributions we make to society. As you can see, Saint Valentine has long been remembered for the sacrifices he made. We all make sacrifices for our careers, the safety of our family, and even some for the charity and well being of others.

One of the many sacrifices made by racers and D.R.A.W. members alike is time away from their families and friends. But wherever you are Valentine’s Day remember those who you love and remind them how much they really mean to you!

Happy Valentine’s Day from the
