o it’s no surprise that everywhere owner Mark VanMeter and driver Joel Greathouse show up with their new ’05 Mustang GT Outlaw 10.5 car, the oohs and ahhs are sure to follow. That the car also delivers in the performance department just makes it that much sweeter.

In the car’s late-July debut at the NMRA race in Joliet, IL, Greathouse promptly qualified number one in Outlaw 10.5 with a 7.161-second pass at 198.79 mph. Proving it was no fluke, he went 7.134 at 200.83 a week later at Bristol, TN, to again qualify on top of Fun Ford’s Street Outlaw class.

“We were pleasantly surprised at the early performance of the car. We really didn’t expect it so soon and it’s still got a lot in it,” VanMeter said while competing in the ORSCA event at Atlanta Dragway in September. “We’re struggling a little bit here because we’ve got to learn a lot more before we can really be competitive running the eighth mile. We knew that this year was pretty much just a test mode for getting the car dialed in. To get serious with it we have to get more laps under our belt, get to know the car before we can really be competitive with it. And we don’t want to come out unless we can be competitive.”
