hen Jeff Burk, Ian Tocher, and yours truly first alit at George Howard’s Huntsville Dragway for the Rocket City Nationals bash, we did our usual bit by touring the pits and seeing who was there. It didn’t take long for Burk to apply the binders and stall the cruise, because just beyond the Pro Mod pits was this gorgeous shiny yellow ’69 Camaro basking on the lawn. It had showstopper written all over it: a pro chrome chassis, spotless undercarriage and engine, all the wired coordination of a computer, and chrome trim and bumpers.

The Reprobate Trio was unanimous after a lengthy eyeball session that one of us had to talk with this guy and get a feature, and that guy turned out to be me.

I’m relatively new to the world of “Outlaw” and Pro Street-style racing, and I was more than a little curious about these classes. Turns out I couldn’t have picked a better team to seize on-- this car belonged to 38-year-old Pembroke, Georgia, resident Jack Barfield, who just happened to be the defending 2004 OSCRA (Outlaw Street Car Racing Association) champion, and moreover, this was the debut for the car.

Here it was Saturday of the three-day Fourth of July Weekend event, and Barfield’s team had just finished bleeding the brakes and doing the final touches prior to the car’s maiden voyage. The car made a shut-off pop to qualify for the Outlaw 10.5 show, and then on its first full pass, a 4.97 came up on the boards. Unfortunately, new car and all that, it wasn’t enough to flag down Jimmy Blackmon’s Pontiac, which eventually went on to win the event.

Barfield was certainly not let down, even though his #1 status would seemingly put a lot of pressure on him. At the conclusion of the Huntsville race, Barfield was seventh in the OSCRA points hunt, and trailed leader Terry Robbins by a goodly amount. His 2005 goal was
the pretty much same as last year’s: He wants to take a swing at being the champ for a
second year in a row.
