THE
LONG HOT SUMMER
Yes, it's now August, and is it ever hot out. This is the time of year
when racers, writers, and most everybody involved in motorsports start
to question their career choice. Not coincidentally, it's also the time
of year when the various pretenders to the championship thrones start
getting weeded out. Looking at the NHRA point standings, cat fights
are the order of the day in two out of three Pro categories, with Pro
Stock giving every indication of joining that operating mode soon.
TOP FUEL
In Top Fuel, Gary Scelzi looks poised to regain the Winston championship.
His margin over reigning boss Tony Schumacher isn't much after thirteen
races, but all signs point to a run of Scelzi/Johnson/Winston success.
It's anything but a lead-pipe cinch, but the boys have that glint in
their eyes once again, and that ain't a good thing for the rest of the
Top Fuel lineup! LENNY'S LINE: 2/1 for the Winstons taking the
Winston.
OK, OK we haven't written off Tony Schumacher. But some kinks in the
program have appeared of late. It's nothing a win or two wouldn't handle,
but the Exide gang shouldn't count on Scelzi and his bunch helping them
out. The ball is still most definitely in Schumacher's court at this
point, but time, and the 2000 season marches on! LENNY'S LINE:
3/1 but still with a good shot

FUNNY CAR
John Force looks ready to bust a move in Funny Car - maybe he already
has! You don't have to be an oracle to know this bunch will not struggle
all year, and the new body will give them the edge they have so far
lacked. Technology aside, Force may just want to defend the title more
than the others want to take it away. Everybody wants to be champ, but
Force is still the man until someone proves otherwise. LENNY'S LINE:
5/2 Down in the points, but not for long
Hey, no headlocks, Russian legs sweeps, or body slams please! The WWF
entourage deserves high marks for their efforts to date. They've talked
the talk and walked the walk, and may even get the job done when all
is said and done. Toliver does lead as this is written, but the match
isn't over. And ya can't be the man until ya beat the man. Stay tuned.
LENNY'S LINE: 7/2 A Texas death match to the bitter end.

PRO STOCK
When I made Warren Johnson a virtual lock to take the Pro Stock gold,
I wasn't counting on him coming out in test mode and staying there through
August. To make matters worse, WJ isn't showing many signs of coming
out of his funk. Any number of racers have outgunned him lately, including
the two who are ahead of him in the points standings. It ain't over
till the Winston Girl delivers the hardware, but it doesn't look good
fer da Professor. LENNY'S LINE: 4/1 Get ready for the comeback
trail, WJ
Yep, that Jeggy boy looks good for the top spot at this juncture. His
lead is anything but insurmountable, but Jeg Coughlin will probably
have to screw up big time to lose the championship. He has been doing
a bit of that lately, but it isn't sweaty time just yet. LENNY'S
LINE -- 9/5 Get ready to polish the hardware, jegsters
THE REST OF THE GUYS
