THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM

What usually happens in the Midwest in January? No, this is not a trick question. The answer? NOTHING!! It's cold outside, all the test sessions are an airline ticket away, and the local track, if it still exists, is months away from opening day! I like the Silly Season as well as the next guy, but it isn't much of a substitute for actual racing activity. When people start running shots of Whit Bazemore and his lovely bride, complete with BIOS, one begins to physically long for the start of drag racing season.

Anyway, what I really don't like about this time of year is the fact that there aren't any answers in play at this point - just questions. Whatever the subject, it's all the same. All talk, no substance, just a bunch of speculation. I'm about speculated out for the time being, but I COULD be persuaded to throw out a few questions and let the rest of youse guys speculate to your heart's content. So I say, let the speculatin' begin!!

QUESTION-- How long will Andrew Cowin be in the Yankee's lineup?

LEN-SPEC-- How many young hitters do the Yankee's drop into the starting nine, most years? This deal goes against the profile of the Boss George m-o. Can you spell pressure?

QUESTION-- When will IHRA announce their new TV deal?

LEN-SPEC-- Assuming they get one, what will it matter? If they do what they did in 2001, don't even bother me with it!!

QUESTION-- Where will Ken Veney and Mike Dunn be working?

LEN SPEC-- No clue, but it strikes me as an excellent opportunity for someone looking to step into or up the Top Fuel pecking order. No teddy bears, these two, but what a coup it would be for someone with the money, but not the expertise, To go nitro racing if they could latch on to Veney/Dunn.

QUESTION-- How big a hit will the Pro Mod group be at NHRA national events?

LEN-SPEC-- How high is the sky? No jokin', national events could use a breath of fresh air, and the trucks just weren't it. Maybe Pro Mod will be.

QUESTION-- How much air time will Pro Mod get on NHRA TV?

LEN-SPEC-- That, my children, may be another story. And bye-the-bye, who loses minutes so that Pro Stock may breathe? Hmm.

QUESTION-- When will we see the dreaded Koehler-Burk-Leonard "Yellow Weapon of Doom" at the drag strip again?

LEN-SPEC-- Sorry, just a personal aside. Cordova was a bunch of fun in 2001, almost as much fun as hosting a Quick 8 show at the same time!

QUESTION--How long before the higglers and nigglers make it a full time project of picking apart the Powerade package?

LEN-SPEC-- Too late. It's already a happening thing!

QUESTION-- How soon before Crate Motors dominate bracket racing, to the point of "specking out" the competition?

LEN-SPEC-- Don't know what I mean by "specking out"? Think ASA stock car racing, and Vortec / T-bird.

QUESTION-- How will the Import racers be greeted by the fans?

LEN-SPEC-- Don't know, don't care yet; call me back when they sound like race cars!

QUESTION-- When will the alcohol / injected nitro racers get the picture and put their own deal together?

LEN-SPEC-- Again, no clue, but I hope they try it soon, lest they go the way of the Pro Stock truck.

QUESTION-- Why didn't the truck guys strike out on their own, rather than sell off the inventory?

LEN-SPEC-- Maybe they were just too much in love with being at NHRA national events. Isn't everybody?

OK, enough of the Q and L-S stuff. Just havin' some fun with the tourists. Let me now throw down a challenge to yšall. We at DRO have this fancy, new fangled thing called a Fantasy drag racing game. Yes, we are trying to make a little money, and no, this isn't actually a new idea. Just new for us!! We'd sure like it if ya'll played! No, it ain't free! But ya gotta ask yourself, "Self, how much does the promoter pay me to come out to his race track?" WHAT, he doesn't pay for that? Well, we at DRO do!! And ya don't even have to go to the track. Real money is at stake here, so take a look. It might be your best shot of making money in drag racing this year! And that, thankfully ends this particular exercise in shameful self-promotion and money grubbing.

And so too, ends this Lenny's Line. Feel free to speculate on the questions above, and any others you feel worthy. The letters department has been a bit dead lately. It could use a preseason tune-up!

Later!
