By October 1986 both big hot rod associations, NHRA and IHRA, had determined
their world champions. NHRA's big three were Don Garlits' Super Shops
dragster (Top Fuel), Kenny Bernstein's Budweiser King Ford (Funny Car),
and Bob Glidden's Motorcraft Ford (Pro Stock). ... IHRA's kingpins were
Mark Oswald in the Motorcraft/Candies & Hughes Ford (Funny Car), Rickie
Smith in the Motorcraft Ford (Pro Stock), and Carol Burkett in (Alcohol
Funny Car). As most of you know, IHRA did not run Top Fuel in 1986,
thus adding credibility to rumors that lunches in Bristol, Tenn., were
lubricated with white lightning.
