Dancin' Mom

IT WAS THE KIND OF LOVE YOU JUST
DON'T GET TO SEE
TAKING CARE OF A HOUSE TWO YOUNGER
BROTHERS AND ME
IT WAS A LITTLE HOUSE, BUT SHE
DIDN'T GET MUCH HELP
'CAUSE EVERY TIME I SAW HER WORKING
SHE WAS ALWAYS BY HERSELF
IT HAS BEEN SO LONG AGO I CAN'T
REMEMBER THE SOUND OF HER VOICE
'CAUSE I LEFT PENNA IN 1965 AND
IT WASN'T ALL BY CHOICE
I GAVE HER A LOT OF GRIEF WHEN
I WAS GROWING UP
FROM TROUBLE WITH THE POLICE AND
LOTS OF OTHER STUFF
SHE DIDN'T GO MANY PLACES; SHE
WAS ALWAYS THERE FOR US
SHE FINALLY GOT HER DRIVERS LICENSE
BUT SHE ALWAYS TOOK THE BUS
I WENT TO CALIFORNIA WHEN I WAS
17
DIDN'T SEE THEM MUCH AFTER THAT;
SEEMS LIKE 40 YEARS OF DREAMS
IN THIS BOOK I'M READING, A MOTHER
DANCES WITH HER SON
BACK THEN I NEVER DID THAT BECAUSE
MY COUSINS WOULD MAKE FUN
BUT ALL WANT TO SAY IF TODAY
I HAD THAT CHANCE
I WOULD WALK RIGHT TO HER TABLE
AND SAY, "MOM MAY I HAVE THIS DANCE"
AND SHE WOULD BE SO PROUD OF ME
JUST BECASE I ASKED
SHE WOULD DANCE ALL AROUND LIKE
HER SLIPPERS WERE MADE OF GLASS
SO DO YOURSELF A FAVOR IF YOU
STILL HAVE A CHANCE
RESPECT YOUR MOM, TELL HER YOU
LOVE HER AND MAKE SURE YOU GET THAT DANCE
