Rick Head enjoys a lonely celebration at the top end of Orlando Dragway
after winning the World Street Nationals Drag Radial title. |
Bailey left first by a wide margin in the
final, but this time it was his turn to have
problems as he got out of the groove and had
to shut down, coasting to a 13-second lap as
Head won with an 8.763-second pass at 168.47
mph.
Head described his day as "up and down," explaining
he made a couple of good, clean passes, but
also "blew the tires off twice." He
said the final round was his most hair-raising
of the day. "Oh man, it hiked the wheels
up in the air and headed for the guardrail," Head
recalled. "I got out of it and the next
thing I know it was sideways and I pedaled
it, but I still hadn't seen him, so I just
kept going. Whew!"
Richie Stine hikes the front wheels of his
1971 Chevelle on the way to securing the number-three
position in Drag Radial qualifying. Stine defeated
Jeff Plemmons with a holeshot in the opening
round, but was stopped by Michael Dees in round
two.
Another driver who made the long haul
from California was George Raygoza, who qualified
his 1968 Nova 6th and made it to the quarter
finals, where he lost to Floridian Michael
Dees.
