Shannon Ragsdale
was among the fastest in Outlaw Limited
Street, but in the end it was Darren Hoyle
who prevailed, setting a new class e.t.
record in the process. |
Limited Street driver Shannon Ragsdale drew
first blood when he took his ZR-1 Corvette on
a 4.971 pass, breaking the current L/S ORSCA
world record. But by the end of the first round,
Terry Woodson would stand at the top of the
L/S ranks with a 4.947, followed closely behind
by Darren Hoyle's 4.963-second pass. Round two
of Limited Street would reveal an even faster
field when Woodson took his Chevrolet Camaro
on an unheard of 4.922 pass, solidifying his
place as the night's number one qualifier, followed
closely by a 4.930 by points leader Ragsdale.
Not to be outdone, Outlaw 10.5 drivers took
total advantage of the superior racing surface
at Carolina Dragway, otherwise known as the
“House of Hook.” The first 10.5
qualifying pass of the night revealed a potential
new ORSCA record of 4.665 seconds set by Terry
Robbins in his 2002 Chevrolet Camaro. Then,
Savannah, GA’s Craig Miller said, "No
way!" and answered right back with an elapsed
time of only 4.659.
Round two of qualifying would change the ORSCA
record books again when Robbins took it to the
next level with 4.647 pass. And just when you
thought it could not get any faster, in the
third and final qualifying session Kirk showed
everyone just what fast is, out-classing Mike
Hill's stellar 4.629 run by just four-thousandths
of a second. Kirk covered the eighth mile in
just 4.625 seconds, a new ORSCA world record,
officially backed up within one percent by his
4.650-second pass in the second round of qualifying
Kirk didn’t
even reach the semis during the ORSCA race,
but he did set a new official e.t. record
of 4.625 seconds in qualifying.

After an unbelievable night, an unprecedented
seven Outlaw 10.5 drivers sat with qualifying
times in the 4.60s. Sunday’s eliminations
revealed a new official Limited Street record
when Hoyle recorded a 4.918 in the first round,
then backed it up with an even quicker 4.914
in his semi-final win over John Iannuzzi. To
cap it off, Hoyle took the event title home
by beating Woodson to the finish line in the
Limited Street final.
In Outlaw 10.5, Rob Hale took his first win
of the ORSCA point season over Miller, going
4.804 to Miller’s 10.077 in the final
round. Winners in other classes included Billy
Smith in EZ Street, points leader Jody Voyles
in 6.00, and Dennis Smith in 7.00.
Jody Voyles continued
his march to the ORSCA championship with yet
another win in the 6.0 index class.
ORSCA’s race number nine in its inaugural
10-event point series has been completed, but
the marks it left in the world of Outlaw 10.5
and Outlaw Limited Street are sure to last for
quite some time. The ORSCA season will conclude
Nov. 5-7 with the Huntsville Dragway Outlaw
World Finals--one last race and one final shot
to put some points on the board for the ORSCA
2004 Points Series Championships.
