Although not
the fastest in Pro Mod, Joey Martin from
Milton, FL, was first to the finish line
each time it counted. Martin's 1941 blown
Willys carded a 4.99/102.97 mph victory
against Rex Kelley's '63 split-window
Corvette in the final after Kelley got
just a bit too anxious, and left before
the tree was activated, resulting in
a foul start. |
Sandro Sementilli
had his 1963 Corvette with him all the
way from Richmond Hill, ON, and definitely
felt the traction at "Georgia's
House of Speed." Sementilli's car
was built by Bobby Johnson and carries
a homebuilt 632 with two-stage nitrous.
Pat Musi and John Stefko provide trackside
tuning tips, along with Dan Parker. |
Sementilli may
have traveled far, but he was practically
a local compared to Tom Ranes (center)
and his Anchorage, AK-based team. That's
right, his father Jim (behind Ranes)
and Doug the Dog made the more than 4,800-mile
one-way trip from Alaska to race in the
Deep South! They were joined later by
brother Jimbo (left) and mother Anna
at the track. The team had planned on
attending the Orlando race a week earlier,
but Jim said a snowstorm that lasted
for several hundred miles in northern
Canada impeded his progress. Ranes' brand-new
Skinny Kid-built 2003 Cobra made a best
pass of 4.750 seconds in qualifying at
Atlanta, and he said they planned to
hit the upcoming Rockingham and Huntsville
races before heading home and packing
up the car for a trip in February to
race in Hawaii. |
