Toyota racers Matt Scranton and Tirso San Juan became
the first Import racers to qualify into a Pro Mod field
when they shoed their turbocharged, four-cylinder coupes
into the field, with Scranton making the top half of the
field.
In the end, though, the NHRA and IHRA regulars prevailed
and Stott, Halsey, Brinsfield and Thomas Patterson made
up the final four. Stott and Halsey had a dramatic semi-final
match with both the supercharged car and the nitrous car
running a "teen." Halsey and his Camaro put a
.028 holeshot on Stott's "Skull and Crossbones" 'Vette
but his 6.197/227.50 lap couldn't hold off Stott's top
end charging 6.161/230.23. It was really close at the end,
though, as Stott got to the strip just three thousandths
of a second ahead of Halsey.
In the other semi, Brinsfield got an easy win over Texan
Thomas Patterson when Brinsfield strapped a 6.140/229.29
on him that Patterson couldn't match with his 6.317/224.43.
It was all Stott in the final as he ran a 6.233/228.02
to beat Brinsfield's troubled 13.788/68.08.
OPEN OUTLAW
Apparently
no one told Charlie Gambino that this was an open wheel
class. The Daytona Beach racer put his '01 Avenger into
the number one qualifier spot with a 6.197, making him
the fourth doorslammer at the event to run a "teen." His
6.090 timing in the second round against Jody Graham made him the second quickest
slammer at the event.
