SCSS SHOOTOUT RESULTS --
JULY 20, 2004
Daryl
Jauernig became the first driver to score three
event titles in the 2004 Southside City Speed
Shop Street Car Shootout Series. The St. Louisan,
whose Mustang Muscle Performance-backed Ford
had already won victories on June 1 and July
6, dominated the SCSS series' eleventh event
with the only 10-second elapsed times of the
race. Qualifying was initially led by Jauernig's
final-round victim in the June 1 event, Dale
Starns' St. Louis-based big block '80 Malibu,
at 11.31/121. Jauernig's maroon Mustang clocked
a 10.85/125 to grab the pole and later improved
to a 10.64 at nearly 130 mph.
With less than an hour remaining in qualifying,
Starns lost his final- round berth to Springfield,
Illinois, racer Mike Faller, whose familiar
Horsepower Factory-built '98 Z28 sneaked into
the number two spot by a mere six thousandths
of a second. Faller, who won an SCSS championship
on June 15 and took a runner-up the following
week, had

faced Jauernig. Although he had clocked a career-best
10.98 only two weeks erlier, Faller knew Reaction
Time would be a critical component in the final
round. The "Katfish" Camaro pilot shaved the
'Tree too close by a heart-breaking six thousandths
of a second, however, as the Mustang thundered
to another 10-second pass in the fifth Ford-vs.-Chevy
final of the season.
Other standout performances included the 13.13/112.35
4-cylinder pass by Bill Simpson's yellow '91
Toyota MR2; the quickest front-wheel-drive run
of the event came from Jeff Turner's Illinois
'04 Neon SRT at 13.58/103.42. Of note was Lebanon,
Illinois, Mustang campaigner Laurence Bass,
who collected his seventh SCSS "Fastest Street
Car Qualifier" sticker of the 2004 season with
an 11.99/120. After qualifying had concluded,
Bass' 4-speed Ford paired up with Robert Buhl's
'94 Shinoda Boss Mustang and Bass improved to
a career-best 11.51/122 to Buhl's 11.71/118.
With Jauernig's win, Fords appear to be rebounding
in the SCSS Series; Chevrolets now lead Fords
6 to 5 for overall wins.
