Rick Murray's blown '82 S-10 rounded out the nine-car Outlaw 10.5 field with a 5.297 in Saturday's qualifying. What initially looked like only a thrown belt during his burnout for the semis turned out to be a probable broken crankshaft for number-three qualifier Mike Hill. "Oh well, I'd rather have it happen here than at a points race," he said. "We can fix it."

After enjoying a bye in the first round, number-two qualifier Rob Hale and his pristine '66 Chevy II were Robinson's first victims on his way to victory.

Steve Longley, owner of the Brainerd Optimist strip, put his 1991 Dodge Stealth fourth on the qualifying ladder with a 4.802 pass. Longley de-tuned for his semi-final match against Birt in order to avoid going up in smoke, but "went too far," he said. "It's frustrating to know you've got 2,500 horsepower under the hood, but he's (Birt) driving away from you because you're tuned down to 1,500. You want to reach right out there and turn up the screw." After qualifying on top with a 4.726-second pass -- the only run in the .70s all weekend -- Birt and his VIP Racing team looked set to dominate at Brainerd Optimist. And they did, right up to the final round where "I just got hammered on the tree," Birt said.

In a battle of the blowers, local 10.5 racer Randy Petet lost traction right off the start in his first-round match against Longley. Watch for a feature on this Chevy-powered Porsche coming up soon in DRO. Ronnie Davis qualified his '69 Nova sixth, had a first-round bye, then fell to Mike Hill in round two. On Aug. 14-15, Davis and his Ten-Five Racing Association (TFRA) are presenting an Outlaw race along with VIP Promotions at Silver Dollar Dragway in Reynolds, GA.
