Top Sportsman racer Matt Hagan qualified
his new Bickel-built Cavalier powered by
a 735 nitrous "Eagle" engine
into the sixth spot with a 4.28 lap.
Also of note was Jerry Haas Race Cars’ lead
man, John DeFlorian, who drove car owner “Big
Drag’s” ex-Warren Johnson carbureted,
gas-burning Pro Stocker to a stellar but
suspect 4.237 at just 145.33. DeFlorian made
it to the semi-finals but never went better
than a 4.395/162.16 in doing so.
Eliminations went pretty much according
to form with Barklage and Little wading through
the 16-car field to set up a classic blower
versus nitrous final round. During eliminations
Little stepped up his tune-up in an attempt
to keep up with Barklage. He didn’t
run a ‘teen in eliminations but did
record a stellar 180.77 mph which was good
for Top Speed of the meet and the series
speed record.
On the other side of the ladder Zach Barklage
was feeding the field a steady diet of ‘teens.
In the final round against Little (which
went off at exactly midnight) Barklage administered
a 4.138/180.65 drubbing of Little, who left
first with an unconscious .402 light to Barklage’s
.476, but spun the tires in third gear and
ran an off the pace 4.326/175.09.
After the final round Little told DRO, “I
think we probably could have gone quicker
but we’re just finishing up our new
motor and I didn’t have a spare so
I had to take it easy. The next time I’ll
have the spare and if those (Barklage) guys
show up we’ll give them more of a race.”
All that team owner (also Zach and Cody’s
father) Mark Barklage had to say was, “We
really like this kind of racing. I’m
sure we will be coming back.”
If the next race scheduled for September
26 is anything like this one, it will be
a barn-burner, especially if the rumor that
the last race will feature a 32-car field
turns out to be a fact.
