“I didn’t know I had him. And
I was looking for that green machine to come
flying by there. It’s good if you can
beat him. It ain’t a win at Indy, but,
damn, it sure feels good. — Scelzi
on beating Force to the finish in round two
“It sounded like a great story. To burn
your car to the ground on Sunday, work all
night, put it back together with a back-up
body on it, and win the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals
on Monday. I was up for it.” — Burkart
after his second-round loss to Densham, and
referring to the engine explosion and serious
fire he suffered in qualifying on Sunday night
“That was an exciting race. I wasn’t
too excited at about half track during that
race when I saw him about a car and half ahead
of me.” — C. Pedregon on
his semi-final win over Scelzi
“It was just a little bit off, little
too high wheel speed in the third round against
Densham from the hit. The car had a lot of
tire speed from very early in the run. It was
making it, but it didn’t make it. It
was just one of those things. It’s a
hard loss. I thought after we ran that .89
in the second round that we had a really good
handle on the car and the race track, and we
were probably just one half nut away in the
clutch from going into the final round. But
that’s how the sport is. It’s very
cut and dried and there’s not one single
room for error at all.” — Bazemore
on coming up just a little short to Densham
in the semis
“We put a little extra heat in the clutch
in the final. Unfortunately, the body was inadvertently
lowered onto the throttle arm and it accelerated
a bit before the run. The clutches in these
cars are very temperature sensitive and it
threw us off a little bit. It threw me a bit
off as well and I didn’t get as good
if a start as I had wanted. I don’t know
if it would have mattered because the car went
into some heavy duty shake - I got in and out
of the throttle - but Gary was already gone
at that point.” — C. Pedregon
on his runner-up finish to Densham
“I came to this race 25 years ago with
$20 in my pocket and absolutely no business
being here. Now I’ve come back here and
won the U.S. Nationals. This is what drag racing
is all about. I don’t care about that
money; it’ll all go to the team anyway
and if they gave it all to me I’d spend
it on drag racing, so it doesn’t mean
a thing to me. A trophy from the U.S. Nationals,
the 50th annual one no less, is the thing.” — Densham
relishing the moment as the 50th U.S. Nationals
champion
“My son Steven has never seen me win
a race before and now he comes out this weekend
and sees me win two times. He’s gonna’ think
it’s easy. Believe me, it’s anything
but easy.” — Densham again,
on doubling up at Indy
PRO STOCK
“We changed motors tonight, but we also
changed the entire electrical system in the
car, the ignition boxes, the coils, the batteries,
anything that has any electricity running through
it, we did the complete drill. When you get
to Indy, you can’t approach it one problem
at a time, you have to find it immediately,
and we’re confident that’s what
we did.” -- Greg Anderson
on finishing Saturday’s first qualifying
session in 7th place
“We’re going to have launch anther
missile in the morning or we’ll lose
the pole.” — Anderson after
improving to the top spot in a very competitive
field after Saturday’s final qualifying
session
