In the final round, Robbins left first with
a .027 light against Kirk’s .052, then
went on to win with a 4.749/153.11 pass to the
4.764/149.95 put together by Kirk. “I
could see him along my fender. I could tell
I was ahead, but I knew it was close,”
Robbins said. “It was a good race and
we made up a lot in the points.” Robbins
left Brainerd with 291 points, just 13 behind
Barfield in first and 29 ahead of Kirk in third
place.
SHOOTING GALLERY
In a true
show of sportsmanship, Marcus Birt insisted
on waiting more than 10 minutes in his VIP
Racing Camaro for first-round adversary
Michael Robinson to answer the call to stage
after suffering engine damage in his final
qualifying attempt. Robinson did finally
show, but broke on the launch and Birt later
admitted it wasn’t a completely charitable
act on his part. He wanted a chance for
revenge after Robinson beat him with a holeshot
in the final of an unsanctioned Outlaw race
a couple of weeks earlier at Brainerd. |
Blake Wilder
revealed that he and partner John Jenrette
recently sold their blown hemi-powered ‘66
Rambler to Guy Robinson, owner of Erection
Perfection, a metal-building construction
company in Rockmart, GA. Wilder is continuing
to drive the car, and qualified 8th at Brainerd,
but fell in the first round to Floridian
Brian Goethe. |
Bryan “Lil
Mo” Morris struggled with fuel delivery
problems all weekend at Brainerd, where
he qualified 14th in the 15-car field and
went out in the first round against Rob
Hale. |
Hale said
he underestimated the track in his semi-final
loss to Steve Kirk. “It hooked up
a little too hard and got up on the wheelie
bars and unloaded the car,” he said.
“I think the track changed a lot in
the last few rounds. It got real good.” |
Shannon Ragsdale and Dennis Hughes (near lane)
squared off in a blower vs. nitrous Limited
Street final at Brainerd Optimist, with points
leader Ragsdale coming out on top with his juiced
up 1995 Corvette. In EZ Street, Scott Taylor
defeated Billy Smith; Jody Voyles drove his
Mustang to the 6.0 Index win over Matt Davis;
and top honors in 7.0 went to Jerry Bryant over
Dennis Smith.
