Jack Barfield had one of only two Outlaw 10.5 cars on
the grounds, so he spent the time testing rear-end gears.
Barfield ran a best of 4.69 seconds straight off the trailer
on Saturday, but he and crew chief Randy Conner appeared
happy with what they learned before a burned piston ended
their day on Sunday. Barfield is still running the 1968
Camaro he won ORSCA’s inaugural Outlaw 10.5 championship
last season, but said he’d have a new and improved ’69
version ready by about late-April.
Jeff Cooner, from Townley, AL, qualified on top of the
Limited Street ladder with a 5.029-seconds pass in his
1995 Cobra with an aluminum 417 up front breathing through
an F3R Reverse-Rotation ProCharger. He had a bye in round
one, then defeated Patsy Cannon in the semis and earned
lane choice by just two-thousandths over number-two qualifier
Shannon Ragsdale for the final. Cooner left with a .370
redlight in the final, but also hazed the tires about halftrack,
slowing him to a 5.08 at 140.62 mph.
Shannon Ragsdale also had a bye in the first round, then
beat Donnie Key to reach the Limited Street final, where
both he and Cooner lit the red bulb on the launch. Cooner
left first, though (.370), handing the win to Ragsdale
(.398), the defending ORSCA Limited Street champ. After
making a 5.07 at 144.69 pass, Ragsdale later said he saw
the win light come on in his lane when Cooner jumped the
gun, but didn’t realize he’d also got a little
anxious until reaching the top end.
