Patrick Jacobsmeyer's white '91 Eagle Talon continued
to post amazing numbers as the quickest 4-cylinder machine
at the meet, running nonstop 1.72-second 60 Feet ETs and
hitting a best of 12.51/107.70. The speed barely beat Reiner
Timbas' St. Louis-based '92 Plymouth Laser, (also sporting
a 122-cubic inch DSM turbo engine in an All-Wheel-Drive
chassis), which clocked 12.92/106.09.
Doug Sluss earned the honors for the quickest Front-Wheel-Drive pass with a 13.73/101
from his Granite City-based '04 Neon SRT, while Ray Connolly took his 122-cubic
inch '94 Volkswagen Golf to the fastest FWD speed at 13.90/105.64!
Members of the Gateway Z Club appeared at the event with a variety of Nissan's
finest and several produced some exceptional runs. Preston Bentley's St. Louis-based
'03 350Z, using a 214-cubic inch V6 in the Z's RWD chassis, reeled off a best
of 12.93 at an amazing 116.47 mph, followed by Scott Pauloson's similar '03 350Z
from Manchester, MO, at 13.14/108.83!
The "full moon effect" made for some bizarre events, including a multitude
of drivers who recorded elapsed times which would have qualified had they been
clocked either later or earlier in the event. Jeremy Lane's Granite City '98
346 Camaro ran 12.17/111 before qualifying began but could run no quicker than
13.04 during the official qualifying period. The same occurred for William Page,
whose Gillespie, IL, '87 turbo V6 Regal ran 12.06/110 before qualifying but no
quicker than 12.41 thereafter.
Of course, there were several drivers who found the required
performance only minutes after qualifying ended. Tony Huff's
beautiful black '67 Camaro from Collinsville, IL, was stuck
in the 13-second zone before pounding out a 12.27/111 just
after the 9:30 PM cut-off. Rob Nolan's '87 Regal, meanwhile,
waited until thirteen minutes after qualifying had ended
to run a career-best 11.26/120 that would've qualified
for the final round and reset his own ET record!
And then there was Shaun McCauley, whose Dodge Vipers, (both of them), have
made some astounding passes at inopportune times throughout the 2004 SCSS Series.
This time, the St. Louisan took his red '98 Viper GTS down the track at 9:39
PM....only to run 10.65 at 130.96 miles per hour!
With only three events remaining in the 2004 SCSS Series, Autenrieth's win
has allowed Chevrolet to regain the lead over Ford in the Manufacturers' Championship,
10.5 to 9.5.
