6.0 AND 7.0 INDEX
Brent
Shaw went 6.011 and qualified 10th of 43 6.0 index cars
entered at Huntsville. Shaw made it to the final round,
where he finished off number-29 qualifier George Bolton
with his beautiful “Rat Poison” Chevy II, complete
with radio antenna.
Richard Reagan heated up the track with his 427 Mustang
during 6.0 qualifying on Saturday night.
Scott
Flowers and his Slo-Nova team arrived in Huntsville with
just a 5-point edge over Michael Strickland in the 6.0 championship
chase. When Flowers lost to Buddy Bagget in the 4th round
it opened the door of opportunity for Strickland in the
next pair down the track. He redlighted against Shaw, however,
and Flowers, driving Thomas Bills’ '72 Nova, was named
2005 champion.
Points leader Ricky Pennington ended up 25th in 7.0 qualifying
after 55 cars made attempts, but made it all the way to
the semis before being edged by eventual race winner Edward
Bendall. Regardless, it was more than enough for Pennington
to earn his career-first championship. “I had never
raced heads-up before this year, so it feels real good just
being a bracket racer and coming into this series and winning
the championship,” he said.
