With only five entries, Top Sportsman was accelerated and
completed on Saturday. The final saw Terry Duffy’s
’96 Monte Carlo against Ray Bamond’s ’99
Firebird. With a red-light start, Duffy’s 7.228/188.75mph
pass was defeated by Bamond’s 7.771/175.88mph.
Ray Bamond drove from
New Jersey to compete at the NHRA Division 2 points race
in Gainesville the same weekend, but his Firebird failed
Tech because there was no diaper under his motor. He decided
to drive to Bradenton for his first-ever Top Sportsman race
at a Super Chevy Show. (Adam Cranmer photo)

dragster over Joe Pasero’s ’68 Camaro. Other
Saturday winners were Rob Williams’ ’57 Chevy
wagon in Bracket Two, Tom Johnson’s ’74 Z28
in DOT and Robby Troupe in Jr. Dragster.
Jessie Harris drove Al Hanna's Queen
of Diamonds jet dragster to two consecutive wins over Paul
