


Joel Nystrom’s 11.31 in his original
hemi-equipped, four-speed ’67 Plymouth GTX placed
him seconds behind Nelson in qualifying. Nystrom’s
engine is bored .060 and stroked to 484 cubes. The Buffalo,
MN-based driver lost after suffering shifter problems in
the first round of eliminations, but recovered to win the
consi rounds.

Ralph Barbagallo put his hemi-powered
1970 Roadrunner third on the qualifying list and made it
to the semis, where Nelson ended his run.

Jimmy Johnston brought his ‘79
‘Vette down from West Lorne, ON, and made it all the
way to the final round after qualifying fourth.

Fifth-place qualifier Tom Cannon and
his 1970 Challenger 340 ran a quicker 11.97, but fell to
a whopping .204 holeshot by Johnston in the opening round.
