Ohio
racer Wayne Torkelson had better plan an addition to his
house; he'll need it for all the winner's plaques he's accumulating
in his rookie season racing with the AutoZone Super Chevy
Show's Mickey Thompson Nitro Coupe challenge.
Torkelson, from Belpre, Ohio, did it again Sunday (7/24)
in Maple Grove, besting doorslammer legend Tommy Howes of
Laytonsville, Maryland, in the finals. Howes had edged Torkelson
for the Trim Parts Low Qualifier bonus (6.487 for Howes,
6.533 for Torkelson), but in the money round, Torkelson
put his Water Wetter/Red Line Oil '54 Corvette Nitro Coupe
in the winner's circle with a 6.332, 220.27 mph blast which
was low ET for the weekend. Howes collected three hundredths
on the tree but his '69 Camaro Nitro Coupe could only manage
a 6.494 at 215.65 mph.
The Top Sportsman class at Maple Grove belonged
to Ron Riegel of Fairless Hills, PA. His opponent in the
finals, John Prime of Thomaston, CT, turned on the reds
and then broke. Riegel's pass in the finals was a 8.096
at 147.91 mph.
