Dallas, GA’s Kell Eubanks (left)
steered the nitrous-equipped ’86 Mustang he co-owns
with Dickie Langston and tuned by David Gage (front) into
the ORSCA record books at Carolina Dragway. The incrementals
on his record-setting run were: 60 feet – 1.293; 330
feet – 3.477; 1/8-mile – 5.229 at 140.36 mph.
Also qualifying number one in the 6.0 index class was Scott
Flowers, who went 6.001 to edge Jody Voyles by just one
thousandth. In 7.0 qualifying, Andy Schaefer and Richard
Dukes ran identical 7.004s, but Schaefer’s slightly
faster speed secured the top spot for him. In Automatic
Pro Mod action, Gene Hayes put his nitrous-assisted ’57
Chevy on the pole with a 4.199-secs pass at 172.78 mph.
So, it was shaping up to be a good, competitive race at
the “House of Hook,” but as soon as qualifying
wrapped up, a light but steady rainfall began and didn’t
stop until late in the afternoon. Eliminations finally began
about 7 p.m., but just as the second round of Outlaw 10.5
got underway the rain returned.
A brief starting-line meeting ensued with racers, ORSCA,
and track officials, and the decision was reached to pull
the plug and split the purse evenly amongst all qualifiers,
with points awarded for qualifying and records set only.
ORSCA’s next Outlaw 10.5 event is a sanctioned, but
non-points, $10,000-to-win race Aug. 12-14, at Alabama International
Dragway. The next points race is scheduled for Sep. 3-4,
at Atlanta Dragway.
SHOOTING GALLERY
Tony Johnson, driving one of the
few Outlaw 10.5 entries with a blower under (through?) the
hood, placed his ’69 Camaro fourth on the qualifying
list at Carolina Dragway with a 4.651-secs pass at 158.52
mph.
