Bob Pickel’s “El Toro”
‘65 Belvedere thrilled ‘em with full-throttle
runs all weekend. Not a reproduction, Pickel found the car
in 2000 and restored it to the condition in which he ran
it from ‘66 to ‘72. Low nitro load kept it just
barely out of the nines.
John Troxel’s gorgeous new “MoPar
Crazy” ‘70 Challenger didn’t fare too
well in Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car competition but stunned
fans with authentic Logghe chassis, accurate injector scoop,
and magnificent gold metalflake paint.
Weirdest match found Dean Stevens’
Ohio-based 622-inch Stratus staging for semi-final bout
with nitrous purge selenoids stuck wide open. Stevens staged
anyway and, with nitrous plumes over the windshield for
the entire quarter-mile, chased down Mike Kokenes’
‘64 Polara to win by 0.010 with a 7.04/195 and an
0.035 package!
