ORSCA SHOOTING GALLERY

Sambo Price broke the number-four piston and damaged number eight in a second-round qualifying attempt that netted a 4.79 and placed him 11th of 17 entries on the list. A late night thrash—accompanied by a friend driving halfway to the Atlanta track from Price’s Mt. Holly, NC, home to deliver two new pistons to his mother, who drove from the track to Greer, SC—wasn’t enough, however, to let him answer the call for eliminations on raceday.

Mark VanMeter brought his 2005 Mustang down from Bowling Green, KY, with Joel Greathouse behind the wheel of the twin-turboed beast. Though plagued by traction trouble all weekend, Greathouse managed a 4.725-secs lap that placed him eighth for raceday, but after an opening-round bye he fell to Jimmy Blackmon in round two. Regardless, the car created quite a stir in Atlanta as the first ’05 ‘Stang to see action in the Outlaw 10.5 ranks.

After struggling with intercooler problems earlier in the year, Josh McClelland had a decent outing at Atlanta, qualifying his 2000 Firebird fifth in Outlaw 10.5 with a 4.690-secs pass at 158.36 mph, then making it to the third round where Mike Hill stopped him with a holeshot victory.

Denardo Barron, of Byromville, GA, steered his high-flying ’73 Chevy Luv to the event win over Scott Flowers (far lane) in the 6.0 final. Barron made it all the way from the 22nd and last qualifying position, while Flowers put his ’72 Nova on top of the qualifying list with a perfect 6.000-second pass.

Mt. Olive, AL’s Ricky Pennington also made a perfect pass to qualify first in 7.0, then advanced with his ’64 Chevelle to defeat Chris Smart in a ’91 S-10 pick-up in the final, going 7.001 at 94.98 mph to Smart’s 7.002/95.46 combination.

Marcus Birt had a tough time in qualifying, placing 16th of 17 entries in Outlaw 10.5 with a 4.903-secs pass. “The Axeman” easily handled Jerry Gunter in round one on raceday, but ran into the red-hot Terry Robbins in round two, ending Birt’s day.

Despite lifting all four wheels off the ground by standing his beautiful ’69 Camaro up on its bumper during Sunday morning’s test-and-tune session, David Reese returned for Limited Street eliminations, where he lost to Keith Szabo in the second round.

Huntsville, AL’s Shane Stack made it all the way to the EZ Street final after starting from the fifth position in his ’86 Monte Carlo, but number-seven qualifier Ed Lavender from Gordon, GA, prevailed in his 1986 Mustang. Kell Eubanks led 15 cars in qualifying with a stellar 5.236-secs pass at 139.01 mph, but his ’86 ‘Stang broke on the line in the semis.
