Just two years ago, driving his trusty homegrown ’68 Camaro, Outlaw 10.5 star Jack Barfield won 10 of 21 races he entered and walked away with the inaugural Outlaw Racing Street Car Association (ORSCA) championship. Last July, after three years in the making, he debuted a Dave Sheppard-built ’69 Camaro and spent the rest of the season in test mode.

This season, Barfield and longtime crew chief Randy Conner became half of Team Skull, put together by Emerald Coast Dragway owner Tim Tindle, with Marcus Birt driving Tindle’s 1968 10-wide Camaro. Early efforts pointed to a potent one-two outlaw punch, but lately Team Skull has been picking itself up off the canvas after too many disappointing qualifying efforts and early exits from competition. DRO sat down with Barfield at the recently completed ORSCA event at Carolina Dragway for a progress report.

Mike “The Hitman” Hill is on top of the world these days. His new Race Factory 2005 Mustang is performing like a dream and he recently became the father of a new baby girl. But it takes more than that to get this

acceleration assassin excited. “I’m enjoying it,” was about all the soft-spoken, but hard-driving Hill had to say after his latest conquest.

Hill (left) secured his third major win of the year May 21, defeating Craig Miller in the ORSCA Outlaw 10.5 final at Carolina Dragway, near Jackson, SC. Joining him in victory lane were Darrin Hoyle in Limited Street and Donnie Key, who also set both ends of the ORSCA records on his way to the EZ Street title. In heads-up index action, Kenny Acree prevailed in 5.30, along with Michael Strickland in 6.0, and former ORSCA VP Quick Vandiver came up a winner in the 7.0 class.

QUALIFYING

Carlton Thompson, from Tallahassee, FL, put his '04 Cobra on top of the Limited Street qualifying list with a 4.914-seconds pass.

After three rounds of qualifying over the eighth mile, defending ORSCA class champion Terry Robbins led the way in Outlaw 10.5 with a 4.569-seconds effort at 166.23 mph in his 2002 Camaro. Top qualifying honors in Limited Street went to Carlton Thompson and his ’04 Mustang after they covered the distance in 4.914 at 152.87 mph. And then there was Key, who went a mind-blowing 5.076/146.70 in his second attempt, then lowered and officially backed it up with a 5.072 at 146.78 to earn the number-one spot.
