TOP FUEL

If you have guessed that this was Clay Millican's weekend, you have guessed right. Without dissin' on the rest of the cars in the field, It would not be inaccurate to say they were shooting for second place at Cordova. During elims, Millican kept up his torrid pace, running laps of 4.62/319.75 and 4.62/324.74 to brush aside Don Reed and Josh Starcher.

On the other side of the ladder, number three qualifier Bruce Litton advanced on the strength of wins over Roger Dean and Paul Romine (photo), running 4.84/304.60 and 4.80/306.46 in the process.

For the money, it was over quickly, as Litton (photo) smoked the tires and could only watch as Millican scored with a 4.67/305.77 winner. After the race, crew chief Mike Kloeber summed it all up, saying, "The weather played a big part in our performance today. The track temperature stayed within 10 degrees and the air also stayed within 200 feet. We had a good setup and didn't have to make any changes."

PRO MODIFIED

Despite it's reputation of being an unpredictable eliminator, Pro Mod pretty much followed the form chart at the end of the day. Exactly NO lower seeded cars won in the opening round, although the racing was close. Highlights of the first set included Mike Janis' 6.16/229.20 mph ripper over Dan Provenzano, Mitch Stott's 6.21/227.96 win over Brian Daniels, Al Billes 6.23/226.73 mph win over Ed Wasserback, and Alan Pittman's 6.25/226.35 thrashing of Scott Ray.
