WILSON REPEATS IN PRO STOCK

The Sunoco Race Fuels "Mountain Motor" Pro Stocks provided a replay of the Rockingham final round, when Gene Wilson used a holeshot to defeat Tom Lee. At the Richmond event, both drivers posted identical 6.655 elapsed times, but Wilson's .445 reaction time gave him the win. Wilson's Cougar ran 208.01 mph to the faster 209.07 posted by Lee's Mustang.

In a somewhat unusual ratio, there were nine Fords and four Chevys in the 16-car field.

"The Fords are running strong now and you can't take anything away from the Chevrolets," said Wilson. "This class is tough."

'TOP FUEL' MEETS 'SUPREME COURT'
With its proximity to Washington, D.C., you never know who might be on hand to enjoy the drag racing at Virginia Motorsports Park. In the above photo, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas talks about horsepower with driver Clay Millican.

Millican's Werner Enterprises-backed Top Fuel Dragster qualified on the pole with a 4.687 at 306.33 mph. It was the sixth time in two years of IHRA Top Fuel racing that he has earned the No. 1 qualifying position.

In the first round of eliminations Millican ran an identical ET against Tracy Howard, but the speed bumped to 312 mph, which gave him both low ET and top speed of the event. In the semifinal, the dragsters of Millican and his opponent Jim Head smoked the tires off the line. Both drivers got off and on the throttle trying to regain traction, but Head recovered first and sent the Lehman Racing team back to the trailer. (Don Gillespie photo)
