A CINDY CRAWFORD TRACK?

Pro Stock top qualifier and winner Ron Krisher, curiously, was one of the more vocal drivers about track conditions on the recently ground Las Vegas dragstrip. But Top Fuel champion and No. 1 qualifier Larry Dixon noticed the adverse changes in both lanes, likening them to a pair of corduroy pants.

After last October's race, The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway experienced some track settling, some bumps at the tunnel downtrack and some bumps at the expansion joints near the starting line. The area doesn't get much rain but does experience dramatic temperature changes, making some cosmetic changes necessary. So just before the January test session, the NHRA contracted with the Penhall construction group to grind the track to the degree it thought was acceptable, leaving some grooves to help drivers get better traction with their new tires.

Chris Blair, director of dragstrip operations at LVMS, said Pro Stockers -- including Warren Johnson, Greg Anderson and hometown masonry expert George Marnell -- told him at that time that the track surface never had been better. Some minor grinding was done early in the week before the NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals, and evidently that changed some minds.

But Blair wasn't concerned about the complaints. He noted that this race was the first time so many racers had competed on the surface. With the weekly program seasoning the track, he said drivers should be more comfortable when they return in October for the second annual NHRA ACDelco Nationals.

"We're going to keep chasing it," Blair said. "But this is one of the finest facilities. It's like when an ugly girl gets a zit. Does anyone notice? But if Cindy Crawford gets a zit, everybody's talking about it." -- Susan Wade

THEY SAID IT . . .

"She said, 'That's the third race I've lost.' I told her I lost for 16 years before I could win. So join the party."-- John Force, recounting remarks his daughter, Ashley, said after red-lighting in the first round of Super Comp eliminations.

"I'm going to get those T-shirts made up: Gary Densham -- Quest for 100. We have only 97 more to go." -- Funny Car winner Gary Densham, spoofing his third career NHRA victory the day fans and media were anticipating the 100th triumph of his boss, John Force.
