ALDERMAN GETS PRO STOCK WIN

Darrell Alderman hasn't had a win since 1997, but the three-time Pro Stock champ worked his way from the number 10 qualifiying spot, to get the Gators win. His Dodge Neon ran 6.927/200.77 to beat Jeg Coughlin's 6.940/200.14 in his Chevy Cavalier.

The 52-year-old racer took out Warren Johnson in the third round. Alderman's victory over Johnson was on a holeshot, as Alderman posted a 6.902/ 201.25 mph to Johnson's 6.899/201.37. (Steve Gruenwald photo)

WILSON STILL FISHING FOR SPOT

Gene Wilson didn't make the field his first time out. The 2001 IHRA Pro Stock champion was making his first appearance at an NHRA event driving for David Nickens. (Steve Gruenwald)

IT'S A TKO FOR SHIRLEY

s

By now everyone knows that story about the altercation between rising NHRA Top Fuel star Andrew Cowin and Hall of Famer and three-time NHRA World Champion Shirley Muldowney at the end of the track at Gainesville. We won't rehash what happened in this space except to say that the official word from NHRA's Graham Light is that Shirley did not "burn Cowin down." It was Shirley by a TKO in the first. It was a mismatch from the bell. (Jeff Burk photo)

What was the young driver thinking when he went after Shirley verbally? Hasn't he ever seen "Heart Like a Wheel?" As Shirley said, "If he (Cowin) was looking for trouble, he came to the right house." (Steve Gruenwald photo)

As a driver from the city of New York once was overheard to say, "Good manners cost you nothing." Shame on Andrew Cowin for not showing respect and not having better manners. This isn't the WWF. It is professional, big-time auto racing with major corporate sponsorship and all of the responsibilities that go along with it. The next time these two antagonists line up it ought to be very interesting drag racing theater, indeed.
